A Change of Seasons: What to Do When You’ve Been Giving More Than You Have
You can love what you do and still end up running on empty. Your family, your friends, and your team all count on you, and lately the strain is showing up in your energy, your relationships, and the time you used to keep for yourself.
Last time, Stephen asked you to remember the man you were before the armor went on. As his own season wrapped up, the mental load had grown as heavy as the physical one, and it was time to look back. What he saw comes down to doing the work, and to one question he asks every client.
For fathers, executives, veterans, and men giving more than they have. This one is for you.

You can be good at your life and still be running it on empty. The work matters, your family counts on you, and the people around you would probably say you’re handling it fine. What they can’t see is the mental load, and how it has started showing up in your energy, your relationships, and the time you used to keep for yourself. Course Correction opens Season 2 with Stephen Rodi looking honestly at his own version of that season, and at what it took to change course.
When You’ve Been Giving More Than You Have
Stephen came to the end of last season having given more than his capacity allowed. His outrigger season with Hano Hano Outrigger Canoe Club wrapped with the Catalina Crossing in mid-September, the podcast had reached ten episodes, and his coaching work was full. The mental load had grown as heavy as the physical one, and it showed up in his energy, his relationships, and his own training.
Why Taking a Break Can Be the Course Correction
Stephen's own course correction was the pause. As the season wrapped up, he sensed it was time to recharge, and he made that break intentional.
For a man used to pushing through, choosing to stop can feel like falling behind. Stepping back gave Stephen room to see what the season had been teaching him, and to feel real gratitude for the men who had been listening and sending feedback.

What Doing the Work Looks Like
Of the five lessons Stephen took from the season, he calls one possibly the most important. Real change comes from doing the work, and that work rests on three foundations: consistency, intentionality, and honesty. That means showing up each day, setting an intention to change and following through on it, and being honest with yourself. He saw it most clearly in a client who, through that kind of steady work, changed a relationship he thought was broken forever. You’ll hear from that client later this season.
How to Get Back in Balance From Solid Ground
Seasons come and go like waves. What matters, as Stephen puts it, is “the foundation that we’re building, and it’s still standing after the water washes away.” Even when he got out of balance, he didn’t fall into negative escapes, and he adjusted from solid ground. Underneath all of it sits one question he asks every client, and it’s the one he leaves you with too.
Wherever your season is right now, you can begin from there.
